What is Om Mani Padme Hung?

Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer), Om Mani Padme Hung, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of Compassion.

Tibetan: ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པ་དྨེ་ཧཱུྃ། Om Mani Peme Hung or Om Mani Beh Meh Hung

Viewing the written form of the mantra is said to have the same effect – it is often carved into stones and placed where people can see them.

Spinning the written form of the mantra around in a Mani wheel (or prayer wheel) is also believed to give the same benefit as saying the mantra, and Mani wheels, small hand wheels and large wheels with millions of copies of the mantra inside, are found everywhere in the lands influenced by Tibetan Buddhism.

It is said that all the teachings of the Buddha are contained in this mantra: Om Mani Padme Hung can not really be translated into a simple phrase or sentence.

The mantra originated in India; as it moved from India into Tibet, the pronunciation changed because some of the sounds in the Indian Sanskrit language were hard for Tibetans to pronounce.

Sanskrit form:Om Mani Padme Hum Mantra of Avalokiteshvara

Tibetan form: Om Mani Padme Hung Mantra of Chenrezig

The mantra Om Mani Padme Hung is found written in two different ways in (and on) Mani wheels and on jewelry, etc. in the ancient Indian Ranjana script and in Tibetan script.

The Mani mantra is a central prayer among Tibetan Buddhists, and is perhapsthe most widely used of all Buddhist mantras. It is open to anyone who feels inspired topractice it -- it does not require prior initiation by a lama (meditationmaster).
Since Sanskrit is avibrational language and has many layers of meaning, it can't be translatedliterally. The generally-accepted meaning is 'Hail to the jewel in the lotus'or 'Behold the jewel in the lotus.'
The lotus flower is a prevalentimage that is found across Eastern traditions. It symbolizes purity, Divinewisdom, and represents our awakening into higher consciousness. Many Hindu godsand goddesses are depicted seated on a thousand-petaled lotus. In the yogicanatomy of the energy body, the crown chakra is imaged as a great lotus flowerwith a thousand petals, representing full spiritual realization.

Om Mani Padme Hum Translation

Om Mani Peme Hung Mp3
A lotus flower grows outof the muck at the bottom of a pond. It rises up above the surface of the waterand blooms into a magnificent flower. Spiritual practice invites us to rise up out of the muck of ourconditioning and habitual egoic mind states such as fear, judgment of self andothers, self-doubt, greed, and resentment. The blossoming lotus is our own natural compassion and love that wants tounfold in the light of awareness. In thecenter dwells the shining jewel, the radiance that lives at the core of ourbeing. Eastern traditions teach that ourtrue nature is compassionate and open-hearted. The practice of yoga opens thepetals of our being and uncovers our radiant, divine essence.

The mani mantra ischanted for purification. Each syllable in the mantra is associated with adifferent positive quality, as well as a limiting mind-state to be purified.

Many Tibetans recite the mantrathousands of times as part of their daily prayer practice. It is also printedon prayer flags that blow the prayer to the winds, carved on stones, and writtenon papers inserted into holy statues and prayer wheels.
The Mani mantra isassociated with Chenrezig, the bodhisattvaof compassion (known in other Buddhist cultures as Avalokiteshvara and Kwan Yin).Chenrezig is a highly-revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism who inspires us toawaken to our own natural compassion and goodness.

Om Mani Peme Hung Meaning

Whenever weare compassionate, or feel love for anyone, or for an animal or some part ofthe natural world, we experience a taste of our own natural connection withChenrezig. Although we may not be as consistently compassionate as some of thegreat meditation masters, Tibetan Buddhists believe that we all share, in ourbasic nature, unconditional compassion and wisdom that is no different fromwhat we see in Chenrezig and in these lamas.

We mighthave trouble believing that we are no different than Chenrezig -- but learningabout the nature of compassion, and learning about Chenrezig, repeating hismantraOm Mani Padme Humandimagining that we would like to be like Chenrezig, pretending that we reallyare just like Chenrezig, we actually can become aware of increasing compassionin our lives, and ultimately, the lamas tell us, awaken as completely wise andcompassionate buddhas.
